Serving God and others helps us Grow

Serving is Ministry. We are not servants to activities or to doing things; we serve people. Ministry is using our gifts, education, experiences, abilities, time and other resources to serve the needs of others in the name of Jesus. When we serve, we contribute to a greater purpose and the bigger picture that is outside of ourselves.

Why do we serve? When we serve, we are being obedient. “Faithfully obey the commands I am giving you today – to love the Lord your God and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul…”(Deut 11:13). It is the desire of God that we show kindness, goodness, and compassion towards one another. “Be imitators of God, therefore as dearly loved children and live a life of love…”(Ephesians 5:1).

How do we serve? By understanding it’s not about us, we humble ourselves and summit to the Holy Spirit to leads us. We align ourselves to the leaders of the church and support them. We get involved and make ourselves available. We become the arms and legs, ears and eyes of God. We actively become the church that God intended. We listen, encourage, confront, and love. “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up…”(1 Thessalonians 5:11).

Who do we serve? We either serve God or we serve the enemy. “You have been set free from sin and have become slaves to righteousness”(Romans 6:18). As Christians we live to please God and it is God’s desire for us to love and serve one another. “Love your neighbor as yourself” (Mark 12:31).

What happens when we serve? Serving others is an expression of thankfulness to God. “This service that you perform is not only supporting the needs of God’s people but is also overflowing in many expressions of thanks to God” (2 Corinthians 9:12). When we serve, we honor God and God honors us. “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me” (John 12:26).

Believe it, think it, and say it: How I spend my time, talent, and treasure reveals my heart. The Bible describes the heart as our affections, ambitions, desires, dreams, hopes, and interests. “Delight in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:4). Everything that we have, who we are, and the life we live, all belongs to God. He wants me to be a good steward of the resources and time He has entrusted to me. While that is important to God, He is more concerned with cultivating within me the character and qualities of a servant’s heart.
